  EM43 is factored. The composite cofactor was the product of 68-digit and 112-digit prime numbers. This factorization allows progress on the sequence to continue. Two additional numbers should finish in the next few days. Let's keep going!

• Server downtime

  During this weekend the server will be taken down for O/S upgrade. The old distro (Debian 4) will be replaced by Debian 5 amd64, since the older version has a limited support and probably slows down the hardware a bit. It's hard to estimate how long the upgrade process will take, but I'd say that 8-12 hours minimum, because I have to do a complete backup first, so in the worst case I'll be able to rollback everything to the previous state.

  The latest radio pulsar re-discoveries are available here. Our count is now at 59 detections of 40 different known radio pulsars. The latest improvements of the search workflow increased the average processing rate to about 200% of the Arecibo data taking rate. This means we're now able to process the available backlog of data - thanks to our volunteers!

• 100 Countries Contributing

  According to the BOINCstats site, Collatz now has contributors from over 100 countries. There might even be more since some have never bothered to set the country. Still, others have chosen "None" which I guess means they either have been exciled or don't recognize the government in power. Regardless, thanks to all for your support.   This weekend we will release new work. As announced earlier, first we will send out two sets of CMC WUs exclusively for Windows x64 machines. These will be submitted this evening. In parallel to that we will upload our first CMS test set of WUs to analyze eukaryotic organisms including the human genome to all systems. Please note that these WUs will require a broadband internet connection since the sizes of the genomes of these organisms are one to two orders of magnitude larger than all what we have analyzed so far. Importanly, run times can be significantly longer as well with up to 100 hrs for a single WU. Also, please watch the RAM requirements since a few WUs might end up taking up to 2.3 GB of memory.   nVidia suggests downgrading from 196.75 drivers to 196.21 drivers because of a problem some are having where the fan speed slows down to the point where the GPU overheats and could possibly be damaged.

  I have good news for those of you whose machines failed on the CMC "monster WUs" delivered to Linux x64 systems. Tonight we most likely solved the problem which indeed has to do with memory allocation. A new parameter setting has been applied and these WUs are now out again in the wild for those who dare munching on them once again. Solving this problem was only possible with the valuable help of some of you who ran the diagnostics which we had posted to diverse forums. Thanks again for your help. Michael.

  2,887+ is factored. The composite cofactor was the product of 83-digit and 124-digit prime numbers. In other news, disaster struck the linear algebra of 2,899-. The process was killed, and the checkpoint file was corrupted. The linear algebra step will need to be restarted from scratch. Let's keep going!

  GPUGRID will be the essential computational tool in a national publicly funded project (TV3-Marato) on Schizophrenia. The aims of the project is to perform in-silico modelling of antipsychotic drug actions. One of the previous task group called *JAN* were already starting to study this problem.   The entire set of CMC work units for Linux x64 machines is almost complete now and so is the current CMS bundle. We have already prepared the first eukaryotic organisms which will cause significantly more traffic during download and correspondingly require more HD storage as well. As soon as the results have been assembled (a matter of just a few days), we will normalize the client server communication intervalls such that all the problems that occurred with the last CMS work units will not reappear. We will then release a set of CMC work units for Windows x64 only plus a first test set of the eukaryotic CMS WUs for all systems to check whether it runs smoothly. If that is the case, we will fill up the server with more work. Exact dates will be announced here. Thank you all for your patience and help with the trouble shooting. Michael.

  Two announcements: 1) The LHC is back up and running you can follow its progress on the CERN twitter feed @CERN or the @lhcstatus feed. The latter is actually a scrape of the screens that the physicists watch to monitor the LHC machine. 2) LHC@home is also back. After a long quiet period we have new studies to work on. The executable has been updated (which is why there is not a Linux version available yet) and the project is now crunching simulations for the LHC upgrade. The team at CERN are working on the Linux executable and the team at QMUL are looking at the server code and are hoping to update that soon. This is all I will say for the moment. However LHC@home is being used for beam studies from the LHC machine running actual data from the experiments is unlikely as the code has been written for the grid and the datasets are measured in 100s of gigabytes. We have been looking into other LHC uses for the project but it is not easy. Later days, Neasan

• Possible Network Outages Over the Next Several Days

  Comcast left a voicemail yesterday evening stating that they would be upgrading equipment in my area over the next several nights and that brief outages should be expected. I'm guessing this is for the Xfinity upgrade they have been advertising on TV lately, but since they don't share any details (a.k.a. CYA), that is just a guess. At least they called first this time. The network was down for about a half hour early this morning. That doesn't explain why it was down at about 10:00 A.M. CST yesterday for a half hour, though. Let's all hope that the upgrades result in more stability since faster broadband with Xfinity won't matter much if the lines are down.

  A very productive month for the Tour de Primes. 309 "Top 5000" primes were discovered, easily surpassing last year's mark of 212. lennart SM5YMT of Sweden and the PrimeSearchTeam once again topped the leader boards winning his second yellow jersey in a row. He also picked up the green jersey for the first time.
