  • Temporarily Suspending New Account Creation

    Veröffentlicht: März 18, 2019, 3:40pm CET
    Hey Everyone,

I am going to begin migrating accounts over to the new server. In order to do that, I am suspending new account creation until the new server is put up.

Sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.

    Best,

    Jake

  • New Workunit Generation Pause

    Veröffentlicht: März 15, 2019, 6:32pm CET
    Hey Everyone,

In preparation for the migration to the new server, we will be pausing the generation of new workunits today. This does not mean that we will stop sending out workunits. Instead, it means that the only workunits being sent out will be those needing cross validation. Hopefully, this will allow us to clear the workunit validation queue by Tuesday morning and simplify our transition process.

This may also mean that at somepoint this weekend or on Monday, there will be very few workunits left on the server to process. This is expected.

    Best,

    Jake
  • Planned Server Outage Tuesday March 19th

    Veröffentlicht: März 13, 2019, 10:24pm CET
    Hey Everyone,

The new server is in and I am working on getting our project set up and migrated over. My current plan is to take the current server offline early on Tuesday and migrate the database to the new server. I'm not sure how long this will take since the database is quite large. Hopefully I will have everything back up and running sometime on Wednesday the 20th. Sorry for any inconvenience this will cause.

Thank you all for your continued support.

    Best,
    Jake

  • IPD's first nanoparticle vaccine

    Veröffentlicht: März 8, 2019, 7:51pm CET

Researchers in the King lab, an affiliate of the Institute for Protein Design, published a report in Cell describing a computer-designed nanoparticle vaccine targeting respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). Although Rosetta@home was not directly used for this study, Rosetta@home volunteers provided computing for related research and development.

    From IPD news:

Millions of children will visit hospitals this year, sickened by RSV. Infection is usually mild, causing only fevers, runny noses and frightened parents. But, in severe cases, barking coughs and painful wheezing can indicate serious respiratory complications, including bronchiolitis and pneumonia.

RSV is the primary cause of pneumonia in children under one and is therefore the leading cause of infant mortality worldwide after malaria. Although virtually every child on Earth will get RSV before the age of three, an estimated 99 percent of RSV deaths occur in developing countries. Despite substantial effort, there is not yet a safe and effective vaccine.

Today, an international team of scientists co-led by researchers at the IPD report in Cell a first-of-its-kind vaccine candidate for RSV. It elicits broadly neutralizing antibodies against respiratory syncytial virus in mice and monkeys, paving the way for human clinical trials.

  • New Server Installation

    Veröffentlicht: März 7, 2019, 5:57pm CET
    Hey Everyone,

We will be receiving our new server today. This means we may experience a few planned outages over the next couple days as we get it set up and migrate our data. In addition to installing this new hardware, we will also be upgrading the server to the BOINC server version 1.0 that was recently released. As is usual during upgrades, there may be a few hiccups along the way. Please bear with us while we work to make things more stable in the long run.

Thank you all for your continued support.

    Best,

    Jake

  • We're back up.

    Veröffentlicht: März 7, 2019, 1:51am CET
Hopefully there won't be any further problem.

Our attempt to upgrade the memory on Oscar (the BOINC database machine) and Carolyn (the replica database) took a bit of DIMM swapping to find pairs of DIMMs that worked. Carolyn is still short two DIMMs (32 GB), but we didn't want to extend the outage any further to try to get it up to the full 192 GB.

We might try to max out Carolyn during the outage next week.

[edit]And as is usual after a long outage, we've got a large number of hosts out there starving for work. It'll take a little while before "no work" messages start to get less frequent.[/edit]

  • Our paper on the famous double neutron star merger

    Veröffentlicht: März 5, 2019, 2:31pm CET
My apologies for letting you know so late! In the previous year a very important paper appeared which partially used results from the Universe@Home project.

An international cooperation led by prof. Belczynski investigated the importance of different evolutionary scenarios leading to a double neutron star merger. The work was motivated by the ground-breaking discovery of GW170817 made by LIGO/Virgo collaboration (see e.g. [https:]] ). The scenarios included the isolated binary evolution which was exclusively calculated on U@H. The simulations showed that among currently considered formation scenarios this one is the most promising. Such a result may lead to a larger interest put in isolated binary evolution simulations and, consequently, to the results obtained thanks to the cooperation of thousands of U@H volunteers.

The original work can be found for example here: [https:]]

  • Download server glitch

    Veröffentlicht: März 1, 2019, 10:00pm CET
We had a problem with one of our download servers that was slowing down downloads and slowing down work generation. We've fixed the problem, but there are lots of people out there trying to download. It'll probably be a while before our downloads aren't swamped with requests.

Work ready to send has started trending back up, so we shouldn't end up with a work shortage.

  • We got a grant!

    Veröffentlicht: Februar 28, 2019, 3:37pm CET
As Krzysztof have already said, we got a grant in the Maestro program. It will allow to continue the project for the next few years. We hope that the project will still provide an exceptionally computational power for the science.

The Maestro program of the National Science Centre aims at providing funding for pioneering research. The research should be done by groups led by senior scientists. The projects must result in extending our understanding of physical phenomena and potentially lead to scientific discoveries. It is one of the biggest funding programs of the NSC.

  • BOINC Open Source Project looking for experienced MacOS developers

    Veröffentlicht: Februar 24, 2019, 3:05pm CET
The Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing (BOINC) system is the software infrastructure used by RNA World and many other volunteer distributed computing projects. The BOINC Open Source Project is looking for volunteers to develop and maintain the BOINC client on macOS. The BOINC Client and Manager are C++ cross-platform code supporting Microsoft Windows, macOS, Linux, and several other operating systems. Currently there are a number of volunteer developers supporting Windows and Linux, but the main macOS developer is winding down his involvement after many years. He is prepared to help a few new macOS developers get up to speed.

If you have macOS development experience and are interested in volunteering time to help support and maintain the BOINC macOS client please have a look at the more detailed description here: [https:]]

If you want to help, please sign up to the BOINC Developer email list here: [https:]] .

If you are not a macOS developer, but have other skills and are interested in contributing to BOINC, the link above also has more general information.

    Michael.
