  • New Team Creation Requirement (1 Credit Awarded)

    Veröffentlicht: Dezember 13, 2017, 10:55pm CET
    Hello Everyone,

We have noticed an uptick in spam teams being created by users with 0 credits crunched. These teams are often advertising sketchy services and are not created in the spirit of working together to help crunch workunits or build a community. In an effort to combat this, we recently implemented a newer version of reCaptcha during account creation to reduce abuse of the team system by spammers and bots.

This new reCaptcha seems to have helped, but not enough. Effective immediately, we are requiring any new team owners crunch 1 credit to before creating team. In reality, this will not be an issue for anyone signing up for the project to actually contribute to the community. It will however make it vastly more difficult for bot accounts to create teams.

If you have any suggestions for helping us reduce abuse of our website and the team system, please let me know below and we can discuss.

Thank you all for your continued support.

  • Missing accounts

    Veröffentlicht: Dezember 13, 2017, 9:46am CET
Due to a too aggressive spam-cleaning campaign (our fault), we have accidentally deleted some valid accounts on Monday. We have restored a backup copy of the BOINC database, and will recover the missing account data.

If you get a message "missing account key" from your BOINC client, you may be affected. We expect that we can fix this later today, once we have verified the data sets. Hence there is no need to register again.

    My apologies for this mishap.

  • Repealing Net Neutrality Could Affect MilkyWay@home

    Veröffentlicht: Dezember 7, 2017, 8:22pm CET
    Hello Everyone,

On December 14th, 2017, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) plans to take a vote to remove the Title II classification of Internet Service Providers (ISPs). In effect, this will remove the FCC's authority to enforce the doctrine known as net neutrality. Net neutrality is the idea that all traffic on the Internet, regardless of its origin, should be treated equally. This doctrine is responsible for the massive success of the Internet today. It allows any company, institutions, and individuals to host their own websites and web services without the fear of having their web-traffic throttled to accommodate another company, institute or individual who has more money to pay for their traffic to be prioritized. It also prevents ISPs from throttling or being paid to throttle websites for any reason, such as, political, or ideological reasons.

Why is this important for MilkyWay@home? As a research group that survives off of donations from our wonderful volunteers and government grants, we do not have the means to pay for things like paid prioritization, or any other potential ransoms that ISPs may decide to charge in the future to transmit data. This could lead to a decrease in our workunit availability and overall reduction to our abilities to make discoveries. The repeal of net neutrality can also lead to new fees for our volunteers. For example, ISPs will be allowed to sell access to certain websites as part of "bundled" packages. This means to receive workunits from us or any other BOINC project, or visit our websites, you will have to buy into a "bundle" that includes our or other BOINC websites. In our minds, this is not a partisan issue as there is overwhelming support for net neutrality from both parties, (76% of Americans, 81% of Democrats and 73% of Republicans). [1]

If you live in the United States and would like to help protect net neutrality, the best thing you can do is contact your congressmen and senators to let them know how you feel about net neutrality, why it is important to you, and why they risk your vote in future elections if they do nothing to protect it. Additionally, if you would like to help fund larger efforts to prevent the repeal of net neutrality or if you live outside of the United States and would still like to help, consider donating the Electronic Frontier Foundation or the American Civil Liberties Union to allow them to cover the costs of the looming legal battle.

Thank you all for your continued support and I hope for everyone's sake network neutrality can be saved.

  • Special Fundraiser for Parkes Data Store and GPU development system

    Veröffentlicht: Dezember 7, 2017, 8:15pm CET
Thanks to our collaboration with Breakthrough Listen and their international colleagues, we will soon have the ability to access data recorded at the Parkes Radio Telescope in Australia. For the first time, this will give us full-sky coverage, including the southern hemisphere, in our search for ET. However, due to the enormous amount of data that the 13-beam receiver at Parkes can generate, we will require extra hardware to store and distribute it. We need your help to purchase this.

Thanks to some special offers, one from the Hanson family in memory of Robert W. & Mary P. Hanson, one from Richard Haselgrove in memory of his mother, Jenifer Leech, and one from Mr. Kevvy, we have the possibility to match donations which will allow us to purchase the Parkes Data store server (~$34K) and the GPU development systems (~$10K) we will need for the coming year. For every dollar you donate in this special fund raiser, Mr. Kevvy will match it, the Hanson Family will match it with two, and Richard Haselgrove will match it with two more. That means for every dollar you donate we'll get six dollars towards the purchase of these servers!

Because this is a special fundraiser we'll have special notation on your account page and on the forums. The 12TB disk drives in the Parkes Data Store cost $450. One sixth of that is $75. So, a donation of $75 or more gets you a disk drive icon. The GPUs in the GPU development machine that we will be using for our recording systems at future telescopes are $1500 each, so a donation of $250 or more will get you a GPU icon. And as always, any donation of $10 or more will get you a green star.

But in the end, it's not about the icons: it's about getting the data and making a discovery for the ages. Your help, whether by crunching data or by donating, is always appreciated.

  • Splitters off, again :(

    Veröffentlicht: Dezember 6, 2017, 6:39am CET
I had to turn the splitters off, again. I underestimated the rate at which we were creating work (damn moveable decimal points!). I thought we could go without adding more space to the database until we had time (tomorrow morning) to delete the old database spaces.

I was wrong, we really zoomed through the files on disk, and we ran out of space. Deleting database spaces is dangerous, so I really want Jeff to check the command script before it gets run. That won't happen until morning. But once it does we'll be back in operation.

Hopefully most SETIzens won't even notice this short absence of work.

    Veröffentlicht: Dezember 5, 2017, 2:23am CET
Applications are invited for 10-week paid undergraduate research internships at Berkeley SETI Research Center for summer 2018. BSRC is a
world-leader in the search for extraterrestrial intelligence – the quest for a scientific answer to one of humanity’s oldest questions: Are we
alone in the Universe? Housed in the Astronomy Department at the University of California, Berkeley, the team at BSRC leads the science
program for the $100-million Breakthrough Listen project. Our scientists and engineers are pioneers in the development of software,
instrumentation, and science strategy for the search for intelligent life on other worlds. We have access to substantial amounts of time on
the planet’s largest telescopes, connections to leading players in industry, and we’re based in one of the world’s premiere astronomy
research institutions. We’re also psyched that we get to wake up each day and hunt for aliens.

Current sophomore, junior, and senior undergraduates (including non-US citizens) studying at a degree-granting institution in the US are eligible to
apply. Around 5 - 7 positions will be available. A stipend of $20 / hr (up to a maximum of $8000) will be provided. Details and links to the application form are at [https:]
