Finally GPU computing on BOINC! After delivering BOINC on Playstation last year, we are happy to announce that from today we are are able to distribute workunits on Nvidia GPUs. PS3grid.net and the new website GPUGRID.net go along to create a large infrastructure for biomolecular simulations. To run GPU workunits simply follow the instructions on the website. Apart from us, this was made possible by a strong collaboration with BOINC developers and in particular David Anderson at Berkeley and Stefan and Keith from the BOINC community, already moderators at ps3grid. We also want to thank Nvidia for their important support.

A new application has been uploaded:
1) this application has drastically reduced CPU-usage
2) it reports the time per step in output, as now the cputime is not anymore a good estimate of elapsed time.

We are still requiring one CPU per WU until the new boinc client 6.3.11 is out.
Windows equivalent coming up.

Problem:

Code: Select all

Cuda error: Kernel [frc_sum_kernel_angle] failed in file 'force.cu' in line 223 : unspecified launch failure.

This new version should substantially reduce cpu usage and at the same time work faster under full cpu load provided that you use a new client (6.4.5 for instance). GPU improvement can be substantial for users who fully subscribe CPU with other projects.

4+1 vs. 3+1

#11 Post by rebirther » 14.01.2009, 15:24

Quad + GPU

4+1 (cores):
vmware (linux64) + GPU(win32): 2+2+1 = 37000s/GPU WU

3+1:
vmware (linux64) + GPU(win32): 2+1+1 = 32000s/GPU WU

3+1:
GPU (win32): 3+1=27000s/GPU WU

Man verliert mit 4 Kernen + vmware am Laufen ganze 10h pro Tag Rechenaufwand pro GPU WU.

Beste Konstellation ist daher 3 Kerne für CPU + 1 Kern für GPU.

We are now testing 6.62 which should reduce substantially CPU usage. Only few WUs will have the new app for testing. If it works we will extend it. Windows XP users please report if it works, as last time we had problems.

Updating driver for Windows users
July 25, 2009

All Windows users should update their Nvidia driver to version 190.xx. This driver allows computation also in SLI mode. From next week, we will update the application to CUDA2.2 which requires the new driver. The current application for Windows will still work under the new driver in the meanwhile.

2009-08-27: GPUGRID - GPUGRID distributes CUDA2.2 and CUDA2.3 applications
Since last week we are now distributing the most appropriate application version to your hardware. This will allow you to use the driver that you prefer, the most recent or an older one

Dear all,
we have developed a new Nvidia application which so far performs 60% faster than the current one. It is stable, so we will release it in the next few days (next week). Today we compiled it also for Windows.
I expect it to become the standard application quite quickly, but for now please accept beta work from us.
ATI immer noch im Testlauf.

CUDA2.2 application will be deprecated soon - Update drivers!
Please upgrade your driver to the latest available driver. If you don't upgrade the server will not be able to send you workunits anymore as old driver are not compatible with the cuda3.1 application.

27 Jan 2015 | 14:55:54 UTC New Beta app for AMD GPUs

If you've an AMD graphics card, please subscribe to beta applications and see if you get the "amdmd" application. For now, it's just a place-holder, but this'll change soon.
