Ein paar Antworten vom Admin:

The goal of FreeRainbowTables.com is to prove the insecurity of using simple hash routines to protect valuable passwords, and force developers to use more secure methods.
By distributing the generation of rainbow chains, we can generate HUGE rainbow tables that are able to crack longer passwords than ever seen before.
Furthermore, we are also improving the rainbow table technology, making them even smaller and faster than rainbow tables found elsewhere, and the best thing is, those tables are freely available to download from our site!

Is it legal or moving into the greyzone?
It is perfectly legal.
You can view this project like a gun. It can be used to defend yourself(by testing your own security), but it can also be used to attack others.
Abuse of the tables are out of my control. But to abuse these tables, you first need to retrieve the hashes from a server. If you got those, your already inside the system and probably have root/admin access.
Whats the status of the boinc server?
Its beta status. I'm still working on fixing the last pieces. (problems with the small txt files downloaded, problems with libgc on Linux clients)
What applications are planned?
Other than the rainbow table generator, I'm also planning to make the index calculator and false alarm checker for distributed password cracking
However, i still need to think about how to do it. I only want people to freely participate in the hash cracking.
Maybe i will just remove the online hash cracking service.
Is there a fixed credit system or how its calculated?
Its a fixed credit based on the chainlength of the current set.
Is the project useful for anything?
The resulting rainbow tables are used by many security professionals to test the strength of passwords.
How much traffic caused by dl/ul?
The resulting file per WU is 9mb. Each WU will take ~ 2.5 hours to calculate / core.
There is nothing to download (except the binary)

Shutdown of freerainbowtables.com- 2009-07-16 01:56:40

Freerainbowtables.com is now officially inactive.
Over the last months i had no time to support it anymore and so i decided to shut it down. The website + forums will remain active, but no tables will be generated anymore. The tables generated so far are still available for download at both the GARR mirror and tbhost.eu
If you can't (or won't) download the tables from the mirrors, i can still offer to ship all the available tables on an 1.5TB external harddrive for 550US$

If YOU wan't to continue this project, contact me at admin@freerainbowtables.com and i will send you the sources needed to overtake it.
Und wieder eins weg.

DistrRTgen by freerainbowtables.com has had some problems lately, but thanks to ZiaSpace ( http://www.ziaspace.com/hosting/ ), we now have a brand new server to run our site on!

We are emailing you to tell you that DistrRTgen is back online and your more than welcome to start helping us again to generate more rainbow tables

To help us do so, simply go to http://www.freerainbowtables.com/en/download/ and follow the link to download the latest BOINC client.
After installation, point the client to use the project URL http://boinc.freerainbowtables.com/distrrtgen/

We hope to see you soon!

Sincerely,
The team of FreeRainbowTables.com
Und schon wieder da :coffee:

New Windows CUDA 3.2 app release

#11 Post by odicin » 11.08.2011, 21:35

http://boinc.freerainbowtables.com/dist ... p?id=38#55
We have released a CUDA 3.2 version of Windows distrrtgen. DistrRTgen will no longer suck 100% of a single processor anymore, so you can use it for other calculations!

Update:

v3.44 hat jetzt endlich volle GPU Last ohne lags.

Our first validator snafu was more minor in scope and something that did not seem to justify the time commitment to work on correcting the credits.

However, the issues over the last 24-48 hours have been so severe in scope and impact that there was nothing fair about just say tough. Also, based on data that continues to remain favorable it seems that somewhere between: heat, load, or power supply lays the culprit. We continue to run in as trimmed down a fashion as possible to allow WU hand out, validation, and credit. This will continue until our host gets some high cfm fans in place or we need to stop work hand out due to disk space.

I spent this evening writing code to grant credit to results that failed validation but match the result marked as valid for the workunit. The updates have been applied for the result, host, user, and team total_credit. I did not try to adjust all the expavg values *just* total_credit. Also, please note that applies to WUs that already have a valid result turned in *and* up to and including the past 10 days.

There are many results waiting for a result to mark the workunit valid and will allow me to run this code again. Please note this code is very specific to the two issues encountered between the validator failures and the upload handler failures that resulted in validation failures. Also, please note this level of credit adjustment marks the most extreme needed and applied in the history of the project under BOINC in over 3 years.

We certainly cannot promise that every single cobblestone has been granted or will be but I think everyone should be fairly accepting of their credits versus a few days ago. Please use the forums to discuss this and other issues as much as possible. Our admin staff of 2 people, who both have full time day jobs, is not able to investigate every single user. Hopefully though this adjustment and ones to come as soon as a valid result+workunit are available to DC against will overall be fair in compensating everyone.

Validation errors?
To those of you whom are running the 7.x development client, you will get validation errors. To fix this problem, please downgrade your BOINC client to 6.12.34 which is the recommended version
