The goal of DNA@Home is to discover what regulates the genes in DNA. Ever notice that skin cells are different from a muscle cells, which are different from a bone cells, even though every cell in your body has every gene in your genome? That's because not all genes are "on" all the time. Depending on the cell type and what the cell is trying to do at any given moment, only a subset of the genes are used, and the remainder are shut off. DNA@home uses statistical algorithms to unlock the key to this differential regulation, using your volunteered computers.
The primary means by which genes are regulated is at the stage of "transcription" where a molecule called a polymerase reads along the DNA from the start of the gene to the end of the gene creating an RNA messenger. Other molecules, called transcription factors, bind to the DNA near the beginning of the gene and can help to recruit the polymerase or they can get in the way of, or inhibit, the polymerase. It is the presence or absence of the binding of these transcription factors that determine whether a gene is "on" or "off" but, for the most part, scientists do not know which transcription factors are responsible for regulating which genes.

Finally an update -- checkpointing working in the application
So I didn't want to send out any workunits until I got checkpointing working, and good news after a couple long weeks and not to mention slamming my head against my computer a few times, the DNA@Home client application has working checkpointing.
This means we should have workunits being sent out within a week or so. We've also gotten the data we need for the Mycobacterium tuberculosis genome, so the first workunits will be doing work on a real genome as opposed to test data.
Expect updates more frequently now that I finally have something working.

DNA@Home is moving!
Hi Everyone,
Just so we can have a more modern server (and I'll have better support to keep the server code updated), DNA@Home is going to be moving over to university of north dakota (where I'm now at). The new address for the project will be:
http://volunteer.cs.und.edu/dna/
So once that's up and running (I'm just waiting for the http daemon to be restarted on the server) I'll be moving everyones accounts from here to there, and then shutting down the project here.

Hi Everyone,
I've come up with what will hopefully be a good solution to the project unification. I've created a new project called Citizen Science Grid, which you can take a look at here (note it's very rough and i'm still working on a lot of the webpages to unify everything):

Since Wildlife@Home has been the most recently active project, I'm re-using the Wildlife@Home database for this project. Note that this project won't export statistics. Instead, credit earned by this project will be exported into the various sub projects.
So this means if you run Wildlife@Home only, you don't need to do anything. If you run any of the other projects, first make an account on Wildlife@Home (or on the Citizen Science Grid webpage) if you don't have one already.
I'm currently working on a webpage where you'll be able to link the account on Citizen Science Grid/Wildlife@Home to your accounts on DNA@Home or SubsetSum@Home. You'll need to enter in your user name and email for the account you want to link it to. Then when you generate credit it will be generated for that old account.
In a week or so I'm going to shut down the forums on SubsetSum@Home and DNA@Home, because they're going to just use the forum on Citizen Science Grid. That way all projects will be using the same forum.
Does that sound okay?

Your accounts need to have the same email address on here and the account you wish to link to. After you've linked accounts, any credit you generate for DNA@Home or SubsetSum@Home work units will be added to the project on those accounts. If you don't have an account there, your account here will be used to generate credit there.
From here on out, all the work units for Wildlife@Home, SubsetSum@Home and DNA@Home will be generated using the Citizen Science Grid scheduler, so you'll need to add it to BOINC manager:

I've officially shut down the boinc dameons here for good. If you want more DNA@home work units, please create an account and attach to Citizen Science Grid.
Wer also für DNA@home rechnen will muss dies ab sofort über
CSG machen.
